What are Jazz Kissa?
Jazz Kissa (Japanese: ジャズ喫茶) are cafés/bars that specialize in playing and specifically enjoying music. The first cafés that focused mainly on jazz recordings opened in Japan in the late 1920s as part of a general enthusiasm for Western culture and music. They were an important source of inspiration for musicians, journalists and jazz enthusiasts. In their heyday, there were around 600 Jazz Kissa throughout Japan.
